Thanks for sharing, Michelle. I appreciate it. I often straddle the two emotions of anger and fear. I try not to let fear get the best of me but sometimes I need to be reminded to look God and ask Him why I fear what I fear. I praise the Lord for my Spiritual Director. There is still so much work to be done in my interior life. And I am afraid to look inside because it can get ugly. But I'm glad someone is helping me. Blessings to you.

Hi Joe, Thanks for following up on the post about anger. That's a pretty big insight that it hinges upon a desire to control your daughter. Thanks for your humility in sharing this less than attractive aspect of your heart. I bet your daughter will thank you very much too in the future if she ever reads this and realizes that your gentleness or the times when you restrained a disproportionate response were due to your willingness to expose yourself to a spiritual director and learn to love like our Father.

To answer your quesiton, I was pretty angry in college and right after. Also last year. But this past year I've been more grateful and glad being able to develop my career and be with my extended family instead of on a small island with my in-laws, with whom I have conflict, and working with people who held long grudges for minor incidents. I struggle more with fear, actually, although it may also be related to feeling out of control. I tend to let the anger and other unpleasant emotions eat away on my interior though and become physically ill. Not good either.

What a blessing to have found a good spiritual director whom you trust. I wish that every Christian could find such a brother or sister to walk along side of them!

find an outlet. i know its probably hard with christine working and you having to watch the kidz.
but i think we all need an outlet of some sort, mine is going for a drive. just to get everything out.
anger consumes and hurts. i think guys have more problems with this than women do.
i dunno. just my 2 cents.

Thanks for sharing, Joe. I wouldn't be able to tell from looking at you or seeing your photos that you deal with anger on a deep level. This reminds me of what one of my mentors in InterVarsity, Bum Yong Kim, said about all Asian males having deep-rooted anger issues. It surprised me then, but I think I've seen it in my husband too. I'm interested in hearing what helps you to let go of the anger if you are willing to say, and especially in how your wife supports you in this process while also being honest about how it may affect her.

Here is a suggestion that came to mind. Since you mentioned being "recklessly angry" with your daughter, and your wife noted how this may affect her understanding of God, and you love photography, I was thinking maybe you could take a photograph of your little one when she responds to your anger. Does she look frightened? Sad? Even angry as well? Maybe if you capture her response on film it will serve as you meditate and motivate you to continue to actively seek healing.

Father, please refresh Joe's heart. Let him wholeheartedly surrender all things to you--his family, his job, his hobby, everything! Would you show Joe which things to pick up again, and in what order? Would you direct his attention to what matters in Your kingdom? Would you release him to merge his passion for photography with his love for and desire to obey You? God, let Joe's heart continue to expand as he knows You more and rejoices in each member of his family. Let this joy spill over to other relationships, like with the students he works with. Help him to "see" them more clearly, just as he focuses on the subjects of photographs. Help him to see that each of these young ones are as cute and precious to You, Father, as little Ayumi and his soon-to-be-born second child are to him. Give him a clear vision for the future and how you want to use him for Your glory. Take away any blinders that are marring his vision, and let him freely give anything up that is blurring it as well. God, help Joe to praise You with his whole being, everyday. Amen.

I like the idea of pastors doing other work on the side and remembering what it's like to be a person who doesn't do ministry as a profession. Although I don't know you well, it seems like you would appreciate having this creative outlet too. I remember you used to work as a graphic designer, and I wonder if you miss that. Plus photography gives you lots of opportunities to engage with people, and can be a ministry in itself as you say. :)
